International Conscientious Objection Conference - Istanbul (Turkey) on 27-28 January 2007.
YSPDB will take a part in the International Conscientious Objection Conference in Istanbul (Turkey). This conference aims to encourage governments throughout the world to recognize conscientious objection as a human right. Since the conference will be held in Istanbul, there will be a special focus on the Turkish legal system. The conference will be invited to recognize the right of conscientious objection on the Turkish legal system.
Moreover, the conference will also raise public awareness of the right of conscientious objection, and the impact of military service on in relation to human rights in society and politics. A manual will give reference to relevant material on the topic, but also provide human rights activists working in the field with arguments and information.
In addition, the following organizations are participating:
Amnesty International Turkey, Connection e.V., European Bureau for Conscientious Objectors, Helsinki Citizens` Assembly, Human Rights Watch, Istanbul Branch Human Rights Association, Norwegian Helsinki Committee and. War Resisters International, The Quaker United Nations Office has expressed its support for the conference.Istanbul Bilgi University will be acting as host by offering its conference facilities.
Date: 27- 28 January 2007
Place: Istanbul Bilgi University Dolapdere Campus (Big Hall 2- BS2), Istanbul.
Target Groups: Non-governmental organizations, conscientious objectors, academicians, lawyers, representatives from religious organisations, UN officials, EU officials, experts from the Council of Europe, political party representatives, representatives from the Turkish army etc.
