How to deal with gender issues

July 13, 2006

On July 3, 2006, YSPDB sent a group of youth to the international youth exchange in Italy. The exchange, organized by Arciragazzi Circolo Merlino in Codigoro, focused on the topic, "How to deal with gender issues?" as part of the "All different, all equal" campaign. Twenty-five other participants from Romania, Poland, Spain and Italy also were in attendance. All of the participants engaged in dialogue regarding their thoughts and opinions about gender issues. The activities of the exchange included discussions, role-plays, energizers, trips to the national park of Po Delta, and bird watching.

How to deal with gender issues?

Gender issues are one of the key issues of the European youth campaign "All different, all equal". The goal of the event was to teach the participants the importance of tolerance in our daily life. Young people must realize their role in overcoming the problem to pave the way for a harmonious future. Some of the topics addressed included, do we discriminate against others, how, why, and what should we do in order to end such problems in our society? What is meaning of the word discrimination; can the word ever have a positive connotation? Can discrimination ever be benign? And of course, what is our role in fighting against discrimination?

How to deal with gender issues?

To understand the importance of protecting and respecting gender issues, participants went to the area of Delta del Po. The point of the trip was to teach the youth that preserving the environment is just as important as protecting the rights of others if not more so. During a boat and bike-trip in the Delta, the participants watched birds and enjoyed the wonderful nature of the Delta del Po Park.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to the municipalities of Codigoro, Goro and Volano. This exchange would not have occurred without their support. Their interest and active work in youth issues is a model for every municipality in Europe.
